Q: According to the tragic incident in China where a mother of a small child was sucked into the escalator machine room in a mall. She fell through the plate that covers the machine and was found dead at the scene. There were a lot of clips on the internet educated people that the cover plate is the dangerous spot and some of the clips even educated people to jump over the plate and land stright on the escalator bar. What is the cause of accident and what is the safest way to use an escalator? A: The truth is it is safe if the plate is perfectly close. An attemp to jump over the plate is very dangerous to both the jumper and others. Jumping should be avoided at all time.
Escalator accidents happened from many reasons i.e. the plate is not perfectly closed, the plate does not fit, carelessness of the user etc. In case you suspect any kind of peculiarity, you should contact the authority and they should temporarily shut down the escalator to investigate.
Moreover, the plate of Mitsubishi escalators are made from a genuine high quality stainless which is tolerant and durable. The machine room and plate are designed to match perfectly and be able to take high volume of load. There is also a beam to prevent the plate from falling and without a special equipment the plate cannot be opened.
Q: Many people think that escalators move too fast. A: An escalator moves at half the normal walking speed of 90-120 feet per minute. This misconception is believed to be caused when someone is standing still on and escalator and everything around them appears to be moving.
Q: Is it possible to get electrocuted while traveling on an escalator in a soaking wet outfit? A: Due to there is no electrical conductor on an escalator's surface, a person cannot be electrocuted while traveling on an escalator. Also the handrails are made of a solid rubber to prevent any short circuit incidents. However, getting on an escalator soaking wet may cause an accident to oneself and/or others i.e. slip and knock the head on the floor. Furthermore, in case there is a high volume of liquid spill on as escalator, the escalator will stop the operation. It requires a technician for cleaning and check the system to re-operate safely.
Q: A person can fall in an elevator shaft when stepping in the opened elevator - The door opens but there is no elevator car so a person falls down. Is it possible for this to happen? A: In case of a one-entrance-elevator, there are 2 doors which are the outer doors and inner doors (car door). When the elevator travels to the floor, there is a mechanism to unlock the outer doors and inner doors to open at the same time. It is similar with closing. The outer doors cannot be opened from the outside due to there is no motor connected to the outer doors. The way to open the doors are only by the mechanics from the elevator itself. A special equipment is required when opening the outer doors. Only a cirtain authorized person has this equipment in possesion.
Q: In case of flood, how to prevent an elevator and escalator from flood damage? A: If your location is likely to be affected by flood, the prevention is to set the elevator to stand by on the high floor instead of the ground floor (this is an additional option which is needed to be ordered before elevator installation or it can be done by Mitsubishi Elevator's technician with processing cost). Regarding the escalator, the machine room is at the top so it is likely to be safe from the flood. However, should the bottom of the escalator is affected by flood; after the flood a mechanic is required on site for cleaning and safety inspection before operating again.
